21 June 2010
On Monday 21 June, channel4.com's homepage will be devoted to the Dispatches debate around the emergency budget, featuring new innovative features that will allow viewers to directly feed into the programme as it airs. Filmed live on the eve of the emergency budget announcement, Dispatches sets out controversial cuts that could save Britain £100 billion. Krishnan Guru-Murthy presents a team of experts who believe their radical proposals could get Britain's budget back in shape.
The online features will include:
Twitter Tracker:
Channel 4 will be monitoring a number of topics on the night to see what Twitterers would like to do to lower our deficit. Viewers will be able to track which keywords are 'trending' in real time via a twitter-worm and a key word cloud. Viewers will be able to see whether the panellists' views have any effect on the public's reaction, and what influential Twitter profiles are saying on the night.
The most notable public tweets will be selected and displayed on the website during the programme. After the show, all the public views collected during the programme will be available to visitors to the site.
Viewers can follow the conversation or contribute on Twitter by following #chopornot.
Chop Along:
Viewers will be able to play a special version of the Chop or Not game (http://www.channel4.com/chopornot) featuring the same 'chops' as those being debated the live programme. They will be able choose the most effective way of getting Britain's accounts back in the black - whether that's raising VAT, taxing bankers or means-testing benefits.
Channel 4 will post the latest data from the game alongside what people are tweeting about to give a more rounded view of the public vote. The Chop or Not results will be broken down by the location, gender and ages of the players to show the differences in views between regions and generations. Following the event, we will post infographics that show how the public vote compares with the proposed government cuts.
